Topp Interview - Single and Hyped

Tough guys don't cry, they meditate. At least that's what Nick Carter has started. TOPP met a deeper but hyped Backstreet Boy in Stockholm, who is finally ready with his solo album.

"I feel free" says Nick Carter (22). TOPP meets a ball of energy of a popstar at the Sheraton Hotel in Stockholm. Wearing baggy jeans, a hooded sweater and a hat, Nick Carter welcomes us to his suite on the 6th floor.

"Hey, nice to meet you. What do you want me to do?" he asks before he jumps up on the couch and goes crazy. "I'm a hip hop'er, yes I'm.." he sings....

It's not every day you meet a star that acts as free as this. There's no doubt that Nick knows it's important to get along with the press - it's now or never for the blonde hottie. He's the first of the five Backstreet Boys who releases a solo album, and it's important not to fail completely.

"I'm feeling really great right now. I feel I've let out a lot of energy that I've kept inside for such a long time, and finally I have the freedom to do what I want" he says.

Despite succesful years with the Backstreet Boys, it has not just been easy for Nick. He takes it very seriously when TOPP asks him to draw his life-curve for the readers, and that curve reveals that he's had two major down periods in the latest years.

What happened when you were 17?
Oh My God! I was far down. Everything was going really bad. Relationships, everything. But then I got passed that, and had a great time, until last year. Then I was just sick and tired.

The End of the Backstreet Boys?

If Nick's solo album marks the end of the Backstreet Boys, he won't tell us. According to the record company, there's a new Backstreet album due out next year, something that doesn't seem very likely if you consider the fact that Nick hasn't been hanging with the guys for months.

"Well, Kevin is married, Brian's gonna be a dad, and AJ's getting married. But, Howie is single, so I'm hanging out with him sometimes." he tells us.

Are you single too?
Yes, at this time I am single.

The blonde hottie has been charming the girl ever since he was an unkown kid, so it's not very surprising that we find tracks like Girls in the USA and I Just Wanna Take You Home on his album Now or Never.

There's a lot of songs about girls on your album?
They are not all about girls, but some of them are. I love the ladies, I really love them. It's interesting how girls can awake feelings in you that makes your emotions go up and down like on the Richter's Scale.

Have you ever been really dissappointed?
Yes, many times. Both by previous girlfriends and by friends. More now than before I try to stay away from negative people, and rather hang with people with a lot of positive energy.

What kind of girls do you fall for?
I don't just fall for one kind of girl. The most important thing is that she is open and funny. I like girls who have the guts to come over to you and tell you that they like you. I hate going over and start talking to a girl.

Meditation

One of your songs is called Do I Have To Cry For You. Do you ever cry?
I don't know why, but I think I just keep it inside. I have problems showing emotions. There's a lot of times I should have cried, but I've found other ways to handle my sorrows. I meditate.

You meditate?
Yeah. My meditation is music. I meditate to relax and to focus. I often put on nature CD's, that works really well.

Just the way Nick talks tells us that he's matured a lot since the last time we met him. If it's not a part of his new ĢI'm-going-soloģ image that is.
"I'm getting older, and maybe a little wiser when it comes to life" he says, describing himself as a thinker. "I'm a deep person, one wo thinks alot. I think I'm very weird and deep" he says. It used to be pizza and cola which was his favourites, now it's water and 'green- food'. "I love asparges. It's actually my fave food at the moment. Don't you agree?" he asks, looking at us.

Do you still party a lot?
There are some parties, but not as muh as before. I used to be a rebel.

Was is too much drugs and alcohol?
Yeah, way too much! But I've calmed down now. I'm trying to clear my head, clear my thoughts.

Thanks to Diana.
