Much on Demand Transcript - September 4, 2002

Rick: Some of these fans have been lined up since 4am. I think they’re ready. Are you guys ready? (Audience screams) Nick Carter! Mr. Carter where are you?

Nick: Oh my God!

Rick: Welcome back!

Nick: Thanks man. Thanks.

Rick: It’s good to have you here!

Nick: Geesh! I’m glad to be back man! (He turns and looks at the crowd of fans.)

Rick: Before we get down to the questions pertaining to the new album and the new single, let’s get to a video request.

Nick: Alright.

Rick: We’re here on Much On Demand. This guy on my left here…Nick Carter. Now, let’s get to some questions. Now, the single’s out. “Help Me”.

Nick: Yep. It’s out on the radio.

Rick: It’s a side of Nick Carter the fans haven’t really heard before.

Nick: No this is different. I mean, everyone kinda knew I’ve always been rock influenced all my life so I just decided to go that route, you know, take a chance and do what I really love for once, you know, and just try it, you know. And that’s what I did with this music. It’s a rock flavour. It’s different from the Backstreet Boys but this is me. It’s Nick Carter all the way.

Rick: But when you guys perform you do get over to the drums, you rock. If people have seen you in concert before you knew it was about to come out.

Nick: Yeah, I mean, I think they’ve known this has been, like, you know, deep inside me for a while. Just like burning, just burning. It’s been waiting. But I’ve been dedicated with the guys for the past 10 years now, so you know, I just wanted to try something new. I’m 22 and I’m ready to get down and rock out, ya know?

Rick: We’re going to be out there. Most people have been waiting out there since four in the morning.

Nick: Four in the morning? (He turns around and waves to the fans outside) Show some love baby! Four in the mornin’! Woo!

Rick: We’re going to be coming out there. Um, it’s called “Now or Never”. Album is released in North America October 29th. Is there a personal meaning to the title for you?

Nick: The whole album is very personal to me. That’s like the main reason I did it in the first place. I’ve had a lot of stuff that, just touring around the world and being a young kid on the road, you know, you don’t get to express yourself and say things, so that’s basically what I did; was when I started writing, you know, things just started coming out, you know. And I mean, I didn’t even realize that I could write or even sing by myself. Fate just took its course on this whole thing with me. And that’s how I’ve been doing the whole thing, everything’s been about fate. I’m God-blessed. I still got my fans, I can’t believe it!

Rick: What has been the reaction so far?

Nick: It’s been cool. I mean, the song I think it’s going to take… (Fans screaming “Come outside!”…Nick laughs) They want me to go outside. It’s taking a little bit to dig in. Cause it’s different from the Backstreet Boys, but I mean, I think that’s what’s cool about now days in music and everything. You get to experiment and try new things and everybody, even in No Doubt, they went from Rock to, you know, R&B Pop, you know, Rock, so I mean, I think anyone can do this. If they put their hearts in it and they just do good music, you know and…

Rick: And with you, how did it all come to be? How did it all some to be this solo thing? Were you just messing around in the studio one day?

Nick: Yeah. What happened was I came from the Backstreet Boys Black and Blue Tour over in Japan and everybody decided to take a little time off and I just came and I was like, I gotta do something, so I went in the studio and started writing and I got with some producers of mine that we worked with on the past albums and some friends of mine and we did about 8 songs in about a week. And, um, there’s this one song on the album called “Do I Have To Cry For You”, which that sparked everything. And the whole record company started to hear it and they were like, “Yo! Do you wanna do an album?” And I was like, “Uhh sure why not!” So it just went on from there. Everything, like I said, it’s just been falling into place. I don’t force nothing anymore. It’s just gotta be the right thing.

Rick: Well, they’ve heard the first single. I’m sure they’re looking forward to hearing the album on October 29th.

At this point they have Nick stop the voting and “As Long As You Love Me” wins. Rick says the next voting is for basketball themed videos. “Izzo” Jay-Z, Bow Wow “Basketball” or N.E.R.D. “Rock Star”. Rick asked Nick which one he likes.)

Nick: Mmmm (Nick smacks his lips) I think N.E.R.D. Yeah N.E.R.D.

Nick goes outside to see the fans as “As Long As You Love Me” plays.

Namugeny: Hanging out with Nick Carter. You enjoying yourself?

Nick: I’m having a blast, man. This is great!

Namugeny: Now before the video you were speaking with Rick about your solo work. What’s going on with the Backstreet Boys?

Nick: Right now, everybody’s just taking a little bit of a break. AJ’s getting married, uh, Brian’s about to have a baby. Um, you know, so everyone’s kinda taking a little bit of hiatus, like a little bit of a break. And so, right now… (Fan screams something inaudible) Yes! But anyways they’re taking a little break and so that’s what I’m doing. I’m just going to be doing my thing. Having fun.

Namugeny: Now, a recent poll for Cosmogirl.com, also the magazine’s coming out. Now, you received almost 10 million votes as the sexiest guy in the world. (Nick gets this sheepish grin on his face.) Beating out Ben Afleck, Freddy Prinze Jr. and Shane West, among others. 10 million votes.

Nick: That’s a lot. (Giggles) I don’t know how it happened. I don’t know.

Namugeny: Because all these girls are screaming for you. And, um, what is your definition of sexy?

Nick: My definition of sexy…all these ladies up in here. Like, sexy comes from the inside and, you know, I think, personally I think sexy is being real. If you notice the realest people are the ones considered sexy, I guess. I don’t know it’s just something I’m saying. I thought about it.

Namugeny: Now, when you go online there’s a lot of things that come up about, um, each individual member. And you, there’s a lot of facts, and we wanted to know, a few of them, if they’re true or not. Because there’s a lot of things online that aren’t true. So, #1; Does Nick Carter have an innie belly button?

Nick: Do I have an innie belly button? Ohhh…actually, I’ll be, I’ll tell ya the facts straight up. I got a hernia in my belly button. (Fans scream, “Show us!” and Nick laughs) I can’t show you. I got a hernia. And um, it’s like, I got it cause I use to do back flips, back hand springs on a tour, with me and Brian, we use to do back hand springs. This was like 6 years ago. So, but I mean, that’s what I got, I don’t have an innie or an outie, I got a hernia.

Namugeny: And another one. Nick has the biggest feet out of everyone in the group. True or false?

Nick: (Looks at the camera and wiggles his eyebrows as if to say “I know what you’re thinking.” And speaks in a deep sort of voice for a second) I don’t know. (Grins) Would you like to see? Haha!

Namugeny: Oh sure! What size shoe do you wear?

Nick: (Takes off his shoe and holds it up and sniffs it.) Woo! (Laughs)

Namugeny: And there’s another one that, um, that says that your head is approximately 22 inches or 52 cm. So, we’ve got, um, measuring tape…

Nick: Wow! (Points to the measuring tape and laughs) Ok.

Namugeny: So we’re going to measure and see if it’s true.

Nick: They do the craziest things at this show, I’ll tell you that. Woo!

Namugeny: 22 inches!

Nick: That’s the same as my age. I’m 22 and I got a 22 thick head! (Laughs)

Namugeny: And I also got another one here for you. You’re the only one in the group who wears briefs, all the others wear boxers.

Nick: Um, I vary. Whatever kind of underwear I can find in my drawer. (Laughs) It doesn’t really matter, whatever’s clean, you know! (Laughs) I wear boxers sometimes, I wear briefs sometimes. You know, a little here and there. (Fan screams, “Show us!”)

Namugeny: He did show you! Someone just said, “Show us!”

Nick: I got like, some ghetto underwear on right now.

Namugeny: And it’s a G-rated program.

Nick: Yes.

Namugeny: Well, you’re going to stick around for a while.

Nick: Yeah, I’m hanging.

(Commercial Break – returns with Nick standing between Rick and Namugeny and he appears to be holding his crotch. He looks like he has to pee or something. Rick asks for basketball.)

Rick: We gotta see some Nick Carter moves.

Nick: Nick Carter moves. I don’t know my hands are kind sweaty. Hold on. (He spins the ball on his finger and then dribbles the ball through his legs.)

Namugeny: Can you break some ankles Nick?

Nick: Come down to the Raptors court and I’ll show you.

Namugeny: That sounds like a challenge, I’m there.

Rick: September 19th we’re going to premiering the new video “Help Me”. The video’s done. What’s it all about?

Nick: Basically it’s, I have a band that I put together. You know, cause it’s kinda going to be like Nick Carter…Ok like, cause I really like groups like, well Bruse Springsteen and the “E” Street Band. So I put me together a little band of some old friends from back in the day. And they’re like 20, 22. So they’re in the video. And uh, the video’s pretty much, it’s like the day in the life of just a rock band or just a regular band. And what you do is, you wake up in a hotel, get a motel, go out, get up, go to like a drum store, like, check out some instruments and then go to the studio. And then we’re all jamming out in the studio, me and my band and everything. It’s cool. It’s different. It’s uh, really raw. Very raw, very rugged. Not anything too fancy. I’m not like, I don’t know, I’m kinda like, I’m a dirty guy anyway, you know. So I wanted to be that way in the video.

Rick: September 19th. Keep your eyes open on MUCH MUSIC for that video. (They go to an audience question)

Julia: Hi Nick, how ya doing?

Nick: Hey! I remember you! (Giggles)

Julia: You remember? My question for you is, if you could relive any moment in your life, which would you chose? Any moment.

Nick: Oh God! I would probably relive my accident on the Grammy’s. I think it was the Grammy’s or the American Music Awards. I said something really stupid on the podium about Boyz II Men and I screwed up my lines and I really wish I didn’t. So, I’m going to apologize. “Sorry guys I did that.” But anyways, I would relive that so maybe, I could get a few more acting things in there.

Rick: Maybe at the Latin Grammy’s you can make up for that mistake.

Nick: Yeah. So watch carefully as I do my lines! (They then stop the voting and N.E.R.D. wins. Nick goes outside as the video plays. After the video Nick introduces the news and then they go back to Nick.) Alright, we’re back and now it’s time for the audience driven Vote-O-Matic. And we’ve got our 3 contestants here. They’re going to give us their vote of what video they want to see. We’ll start with you. What’s your name?

Girl #1: Amanda

Nick: Amanda. (He puts his arm around her) Ok baby, I ain’t never done this before, but I want to know what is the video you want to hear?

Amanda: I want to see Edwin “Alive”.

Nick: “Alive”. Ok. Ok.

Amanda: You’ll like it.

Nick: Ok, I wanna see that video. Ok, what is your name?

Girl #2: Alex.

Nick: Alright Alex. What do you wanna see?

Alex: “Ex Girlfriend” from No Doubt.

Nick: “Ex Girlfriend” No Doubt. Ooooo, No Doubt. Gwen. Gwen’s hot isn’t she?

Alex: Yeah. (Laughs)

Nick: Hey come on you can admit it! Don’t matter! She’s hot! Come on. Ok, last but not least, what’s your name?

Girl #3: Um, Alana.

Nick: Ok, what’s the video you want to see?

Alana: Um, “Good Times” by Styles.

Nick: “Good Times” by Styles. Oh. So, ok well then, we’re going to see right now… (She hands him a rose) Awwww (makes a face like he’s starting to cry. Sniffs the rose.) I’m going to cry. I can’t do this no more! No, ok, right now we’re going to a break and we’ll see what happens after it.

Namugeny: We’re back on Much On Demand and this guys here, Nick Carter… (Nick holds the rose up to her hair) is making a lot of ladies smile.

Rick: During the commercial breaks and the videos, you guys can’t see this, but Nick, you’re going up to everyone individually. You’re such a good guy. Such a good guy.

Nick: Yeah, well I haven’t been here in a while so, I’m trying to get enough love that I can get, ya know! Try to get it all.

Namugeny: One of the, you know, perks of the job, right?

Nick: (gives a sexy and suave look to the camera and says in a funny voice) Yeah baby… (Inaudible) (Laughs)

Namugeny: Right now we’ve got a caller. Julia. Krista, excuse me, Krista. Hey Krista. Say hi to Nick.

Krista: Hi Nick how are you?

Nick: (in a funny voice) Hello, how are you? Can you see me?

Krista: Before I ask my question I was wondering if you could say hi to my two sisters and my friend Alisa.

Nick: Two sisters and friend Alisa. Hi two sisters and friend Alisa! (Goes up to the camera and holds up the rose.) How are you? (Smiles and giggles) Would you like a rose? I would give it to you but there’s a big glass piece in my way. (Taps the camera lens with the rose and laughs) Got a question?

Krista: I was just wondering how you felt about Brian and Leighanne having their first baby?

Nick: Uh, I mean, hey it’s a part of life, things like that happen. You know, I’m… (Audience laughs) Ok, that’s not what I meant, like THAT, you know what I mean (walks away with his back to the camera and hides his head in his jacket).

Rick: But I got all the ladies back here! (Audience laughs)

Nick: (sings) It’s getting hot in here… (Looks like he’s going to take his jacket off).

Namugeny: Now they’re taking his clothes off!

Nick: (laughs) No! I’m playing. Nah Nah Nah! On the real, I got mad respect, I love Brian and I hope, you know, I’m happy for him. I'm happy for him. I can’t believe it! It’s cool.

Rick: It’ll be happening to you one day!

Nick: It’s a little Brian! Oh my God! Can you believe that? A little Brian running around playing basketball. Oh my God!

Namugeny: You notice how he avoided the question?

Rick: Yeah!

Nick: I did not!

Rick: I noticed.

Nick: What what what? Me? Nah! (Grabs crotch again!)

Rick: It’s going to be happening to you someday!

Nick: (walks away a bit) See ya!

Rick: Krista. Thanks for your call. Say hi to all the BSB fans in Nova Scotia.

Nick: Thank you! (Waves)

Rick: Let’s get down to the quiz. The Pop Quiz with Nick Carter. Are you ready for this?

Nick: Oh oh!

Rick: You have to answer I’m sorry. If you were forced to join another pop group, which one would it be? I’ll give you some options (Nick laughs). N Sync, BBMak, Hanson, LFO or 98 degrees. (Nick doubles over laughing!) Not saying it’s going to happen, but if you were forced to.

Nick: Ok, exclude LFO and 98 Degrees. Just cut off the back end. (Crowd reacts) I like them, they’re cool. It would be, like, BBMak probably. Yeah. I like BBMak.

Rick: Ok, who is most likely to explore the Red Light district in Amsterdam first? Would it be Zack Hanson, Bow Wow or AJ McLean? (Nick gets a smirk on his face.)

Nick: These are some choosy questions buddy! (Laughs). Uh, I think I don’t need to answer that. You already know, ok? (Laughs)

Namugeny: We don’t know!

Rick: Lastly, which is the oddest thing that’s been happening in the pop world lately? Outer space travel, reality show pop bands or members of boy bands having babies? (Nick laughs)

Nick: I have never heard this many cool questions! Oh God! (Taps his head with the rose) Well being the fact that the space thing didn’t happen…that would have been cool…

Rick: Well, if they can come up with the 20 million, it’s going to happen, I’m sure.

Nick: But um, I don’t know, maybe the baby thing man, that’s weird. (Laughs)

Namugeny: That they’re having them or claiming them?

Nick: Oh. (Laughs) That’s another issue. (Laughs) It’s not mine though.

Rick: Well, let’s put a hold to the Pop Quiz with Nick Carter. It went over fairly well, don’t you think?

Nick: (fans himself) My ears are burning, I think someone’s talking about me. (Laughs)

Rick: Um, is there any video out there right now that you want to check out?

Nick: Yeah. Is this the one I can do? The one I told you before?

Rick: Yes.

Nick: Yes! I’ve been dying to see this video cause the song will not get out of my head. It’s the Papa Roach video, “She Loves Me Not.” I love that song man! Oh my God! And the video’s sick!

Rick: Let’s check it out. It’s Nick Carter’s request right here on Much on Demand. Papa Roach.

Rick: That song rocks!

Namugeny: Nick Carter’s request.

Rick: Lastly, before Nick leaves, cause it’s inevitable, it’s going to happen. You’re album come out October 29th.

Nick: Yes.

Rick: How about the BSB album?

Nick: Actually, um, we’re talking, it wasn’t even been starting to be recorded. (Chuckles…crowds saying “Sing!”) I actually wanted to bring my band but you know…

Rick: We do have a set of drums back there.

Nick: You have a set of drums. Do you wanna go back there? Are they set up?

Rick: They’re set up right? Do we have sticks?

Nick: Awww they don’t have sticks. But anyways, the album is going to be next year, like, actually middle of next year before we start recording heavy, like and really doing it. But right now, I’m having fun doing what I’m doing. I’m like; I mean...that’s all I can say. I’m loving it.

Namugeny: Thank you for stopping by. Guys give him some love. (Fans scream) Nick Carter. Debut album “Now or Never” coming out October the 29th.

(Nick goes back outside to say bye to the fans and he leans into the crowd to allow the girl’s to hug him a bit.)

Commercial Break and when they return Nick is signing autographs in the building. Namugeny says Nick has gone around and said hi to almost every person inside MUCH. They announce the last Vote-O-Matic. NO Doubt wins and Nick leaves. They play the video.

Interview transcribed by Kry. Thank you.
