DJ: Nick Carter. How are ya doing sir?

NICK: What's up!

DJ: Man, listen...what is it with you? It's like we came in this afternoon, a trail of girls outside man! Please, before we go any further we talk about your new single and your album. What is the secret to, to like having crazy fans. I mean, we get a lot of fans on the emails but we don't actually get people following us around!

DJ: Man you lying! You know you get girls! Look at you!

NICK: You, you're a pimp!

DJ: Alright.

NICK: You're a pimp! You're the master!

NICK: You know, you ever seen that movie "How High"?

DJ: No I've not seen that yet! Redman and Method Man...I've not seen that yet.

NICK: Go, go watch "How High" and there's this one part where there's this dude and he's like (in a funny voice) "Gimme my baby powder" and he pours the baby powder...

NICK: Smacks his....(starts laughing)....smack his bitches up!

DJ: (still laughing) Well listen, welcome to the UK.

NICK: Dude that's pretty pimp!

DJ: It's me, it's me! Nothing my mom would appreciate man.

NICK: You the man! You got them!

DJ: Kind of the man but not quite a pimp, ya know?!

NICK: See I'm tryin' to be like you dawg!

DJ: You tryin' to be like me?!

NICK: I'm tryin' to be like you. I'm tryin' to live your life!

DJ: Now hey, that is....that's a good beginning! You know we can talk about that a little later. We'll get off a little bite to eat and I'll show you the ways of the night school! Welcome along to the UK. It's a pleasure to have you.

NICK: Thanks. Thanks for having me.

DJ: Busy day? Tower Records this morning.

NICK: Yes. It's cool man. I'm having a blast man. Even though it's busy I'm still having fun.

DJ: So listen, I guess the question we have to ask is what's happening with the Backstreet Boys before we even talk about you because I mean, whenever a group member kind of like does his own thing it's kinda like the fans freak and it's like oh my God what is happening with the group! So lets set the record straight.

NICK: Yeah they do. I mean, actually it was funny because I remember back in the day like when we had first started and everything...uhh like 'Take That' had just broken up.

DJ: Wow...

NICK: And we were like...I was watching...we were watching on TV and we were seeing the whole thing happening. They had this big press conference and everything and like everybody was trippin'. But ya know, honestly our fans...you don't have to...it don't have to be like that cause WE AIN'T BREAKING UP.

DJ: That's good news! That's good news, that's good news.

NICK: Ya know...and it's like they don't have to trip and everything because I mean really right now I've been dying to do like some type of rock music since I was a little kid. And uhh, growing up and everything in the group and even though I LOVE what I do with them I just wanted to try something different. And that's all I'm doing right now. I'm trying something different. If it does big and good, hey that's cool. DJ: I was very surprised I mean, cause I'm good friends with the people at your label it was like 'we got the new Nick Carter single' and I was like woah...Nick Carter...what's up with the group? (Nick laughs) So now you've squashed that. The second question has to be asked, is rock your fortay? Is that what's always been oozing out of your blood from being (can't understand this part) in the group?

NICK: Yeah. It's definitely rock. If you listen to the album you can definitely tell though that it still has pop influences like to the melodies, to the umm...ya know...to the words and stuff like that so it's not like ya know...hard as (starts making loud strange noise) like motor head rock or anything like that. (laughing) You know what I'm sayin'?

DJ: So how would you describe it then? Let me see...is it pop/rock or is rock/pop or is it...

NICK: It's kind of like..you know it's funny because I used to be a big like Bryan Adams fan and I was big into Mutt Lang and like his stuff that he wrote for like you know Led Zepplin or Def Leppard and uhh...and you know, Bryan Adams and I loved Bruce Springstein and stuff like that. So I really was like huge into that era and those times and that was basically because of my parents. They used to listen to that stuff a lot...and Journey. And uhh, the thing was I really wanted to have that in the music like kind of just...when I went into the studio I wanted to just like bring back like that old feel good feeling of those times. But just like re-invent it. You know, put like hipper bass to it and like nicer stuff and uhh that's what I think I've done. So it's not like hard hard rock. It's definitely...it's pop rock. It's pop rock. And umm...but it has edge and that's what I wanted to be. I didn't want to come off sounding like some whack stuff you know what I'm sayin'? Corny, jacked up ya know.

DJ: I know what you're saying cause that would of really freaked out people for real. Well listen, lets take a little break. When we come back we're gonna play your new single which is called "Help Me" it's out here in the UK on 7th of October. And no doubt you have people following you around all day...I wanna know a little bit more about that later on in the show.

NICK: I'm telling you...

DJ: I wanna know a little bit more about the album because we're very intrigued about that.

DJ: It's schoolies night school with a very special guest tonight Mr. Nick Carter. (laughs) We say your last name actually quite differently in the UK. We say Car-er (that's the way the DJ sounded) It's Car-er basically. But it's Carter. Gotta say Nick Carter.

NICK: I like Car-er!

DJ: You like Car-er?! Let me hear your english accent by the way.

NICK: (in a sort of english accent) I don't have an english a...acc....I suck at it! (DJ laughs) I suck! Yeah he's American alright!

DJ: He definitely is!

NICK: (in a Texan accent) He's got that damn accent going from like southern countries or somethin'.

DJ: So that's the new single "Help Me". Lets, lets talk essentially what it's all about before we talk about the new album.

NICK: Uhh...well...the single, right? Is that what you're talking about?

DJ: Yeah...the single yeah. What's it all about? "Help Me."v

NICK: Well anyways, "Help Me" is...

DJ: You really need help!

NICK: I have lost my mind. (laughs) Umm...no..the single "Help Me" is definitely umm...when I had listened...first off I didn't write the song. But umm, even though I didn't write the song I did have a large influence on the whole entire album. If I wanted to record songs I didn't write at all or not, ya know? And uhh, when I had listened to the song I was like, I'm just going through this...like this time, this emotional state of mind....I was just like...and I'm kind of weird in the first place. And uhh, ya know...I'm jacked up in the head. (DJ laughs) So, I...I was listening to the song and I'm like damn...this songs really like...hitting off where I'm at and the kind of person I am. And, exactly what I'm asking for right now I'm like...I was just looking for some help for...just help me figure out the difference cause I kind of get confused sometimes, ya know? And I just thought it was a really uhh good first song to come out with and just really break me open as...as a solo artist and uhh...put me out. So I mean, I'm really proud of the song...I like the song and I enjoy the song. Umm...I think it's a hot song. And uhh, umm...I mean it definitely connects with me and that's the only reason why I did it in the first place.

DJ: Hey that makes total sense as I listen to that. So, lets talk about the album now. Which control effectively did you have over that? And essentially what's it called?

NICK: Uhh...the album's called "Now or Never" and I had control over the whole album. That's what was so cool about this...the whole process. Because when you're in a group you don't have control over the whole album. You have other four...four other people's opinions and stuff. So I had definitely had control over the whole entire music...umm....you know...everything. And it was, it was dope. I loved it. It was so cool because I was actually able...I was able to get in the studio and everything that I was feeling...everything that I was writing...it was coming out. And that's why I was actually able to put a rock feel to it.

DJ: How different was it working on this album then working with the boys?

NICK: Umm, well...the difference was definitely uhh...I didn't have the guys there umm..the whole time or like mainly at all because I was all around the world and I was by myself, ya know? And uhh, the difference was ya know it was all me signing on the whole entire album. It was me taking care of the backgrounds on the album, me taking care of the lead vocals, even me writing the songs, umm...even me ya know, putting some of the music influence in there and everything ya know?

DJ: How do the guys feel about your solo project? Are the behind you or are they just kind of like well we're gonna leave you to yourself until we get back to Backstreet Boys?

NICK: Well they're kind of leaving me to myself to just let me do my thing and everything. I think that's what it's all about and they realize that. It's cause it would be the same way with any of them. But they're definitely supportive in what I'm doing. And they really enjoy...like some of the guys really enjoy like what I'm doing to. But it's not...the kind of music is not all their favorite influences...at the same time. But they, they definitely see how it is and see what it's doing for me as an individual...as a person. Cause it's really pulling me out and really...like just helping me get on my feet and learn...like by myself and be an individual.

DJ: So what are the rest of the boys doing right now?

NICK: Umm, some of the guys are getting married.

DJ: Really?

NICK: AJ's getting married. Umm, Brian's having a baby. Umm, so it's like...and you know Kevin's married and you know Howie's doing a lot of like individual stuff. Howie's like... me and Howie are the only ones that are really like single.

DJ: Can't believe you guys have been together for nearly ten years now!

NICK: That's sick huh?

DJ: It's like...wow ten years and you guys are still together! I mean, do you think that the fans kind of still have you in a certain place where you were maybe five years ago...maybe four years ago? Do you think that this whole thing is a bit of a suprise to your fans....would you say?

NICK: Umm, yeah that's...and I think that in the beginning that's what I was gonna answer to...it's kind of a suprise...it was kind of a suprise to the guys to because it's been the same...it's been the same thing for ten years. And me being the youngest it was kind of just like when I did wanna try something new and try something different it was really like a...just a weird thing and everything. But they finally got...they got used to it to. But umm, ya know it's probably gonna be different for the fans to but I think as long as they see that I'm happy and they see that it's really helping me and it's not like putting me down and making me a worse person I'm sure that they'll be supportive.

DJ: I'm sure it won't do that.

NICK: I mean, that's the kind of fans we got ya know? They're really supportive. They stick to a lot of stuff.

DJ: We've had millions of emails over the last couple of days. We had an interview with Justin Timberlake of course who's also doing his main thing. Ya know, we spoke about the whole thing between the rivalry between Backstreet Boys and +NSYNC and he was like there isn't any, ya know?

NICK: Well there isn't.

DJ: You guys are cool, ya know?

NICK: We are. I mean, I like... dude, me and him are really cool. We're the youngest of each of our groups and uhh, I think we just look at the situations like... like it is and that's... we are entertainers and musicians. And uhh, all we're trying to do is set the same... we have the same goal set and we're just trying to entertain people and make people happy with music.

DJ: Do you think the American...maybe the European press are gonna put you two together and try and play you off against each other...say Nick Carter's here...Timberlake's here and the whole thing with the Backstreet and the +NSYNC. Do you think it's healthy?

NICK: Well that's what they did in the first place.

DJ: Yeah.

NICK: With the Backstreet Boys and +NSYNC... ya know? It was definitely that whole rivalry. I'm not saying...

DJ: Yeah I know what you're saying.

NICK: It's just the media in general. And uhh, they did that and... I mean it's just gonna happen. It's inevitable...it's gonna happen. But umm...maybe it's not. Maybe they won't. I don't know. I mean, really as long as we don't pay attention to the bull crap and ya know... everything will be fine.

DJ: Listen Nick Carter it's been an absolute pleasure having you here today.

NICK: Thanks for having me.

DJ: Any of the weekends we got enough time sit down and I can teach you a good 'ol english accent.

NICK: Hey... Thank ya mate!

DJ: Geez mate! Thank ya very much mate! Pleasure having you on the show. Now listen before you go, I want you to just like....we know that you've got your fans literally sitting in front of the radio now, cross legged they are...they are here tonight. We know that. Could you send a little message to your fans?

NICK: Uhh... send a little message to my fans... well... uhh that yo...I'm picturing them sitting there listening, if they are, and if they are listening... thank you... you listening right now. And you deserve everything that I'm doing right now. I'm...I'm trying my best to make music for you and I love you and thank you for...you know... just being there for the whole time with the Backstreet Boys and everything. And I'm gonna work my hardest to just... you know... make good music and make you happy.

DJ: Excellent. Nick, I mean there's one question we forgot to ask you and I'm sure if I don't ask you it we're gonna get killed and that is, when are you coming to the UK to perform as a solo artist or coming back with the boys because that's all that everybody seems to want to know. The thing is, with the American groups there's a lot of love for the UK but we never get to see the groups as often as we should. I remember the last time we've seen you was about maybe three years ago. Since then, you haven't been back. So what's gonna happen? You coming to the UK?

NICK: We're talking about it.

DJ: Right...

NICK: But umm, definitely like early January I had talked with my record company, my managers and it was very important for me to come over here like even before America.

DJ: Yeah.

NICK: Ya know...

DJ: Really? Before America?!

NICK: Yes. Before America.

DJ: Wow!

NICK: I mean, and that's saying a lot to because you know I've been over there for a long time and I am American so... I really... I don't know it's like the success and the people who really showed loved to the Backstreet Boys and like I said before... got us to that point that they came from Europe and England.

DJ: Wow...that's... I'm kind of takin back by that whole thing.

NICK: So I really definitely want to and I've talked with them about coming over here like early January and performing small venues like two to three thousand seaters that are umm, that are really intimate and really close with the fans and let them like just really see.

DJ: Now that's what we're looking for. We have something here called the capsule living room which we invite 15 people and a friend so it's just a total of 30 people it's just a very small room. Would you be interested in doing some of that if we could get you back in?

NICK: I would love to. If I get an opportunity and I'm here. I'm doing it ya know?

DJ: Wow...

NICK: Look, I mean...like I said...ya know...I definitely have to. I've been able to take two steps back and really just look at the situation and look and see who around the world has definitely given the most love and shown...and who deserves the most respect when it comes too being here.

DJ: Wow...I can't believe this. (laughs) I'm really taken back by that. Really really taken back by that.

NICK: So I really wanna come here.

DJ: Well listen, thank you very much for joining us on the show tonight. We've got to exchange numbers cause when you come back over to the UK you gotta come back on the show.

NICK: I would love too.

DJ: And we'll sit down with a coffee and I'll teach you an english accent as promised!

NICK: Hey hey hey...here...open your hand...give me your hand out...baby powder!

NICK: Take that baby powder baby ugh!!

DJ: Alright, if you don't know what it's all about you need to see "How High". Method Man and Redman.

NICK: Take that baby powder! He's a pimp!

NICK: You're a pimp!

DJ: I aint a pimp!

NICK: You're a pimp!

DJ: My mommy will not appreciate that!

NICK: Mom, don't worry....your son's a pimp.

Thanks to Sarah & Amanda.
