Honest NICK CARTER: Done with drugs

"Yes, I’ve come across things," Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys answers when questioned if he has tried drugs.

"All drugs are alike," he says, "it´s probably over with that sort of thing for me. People start with drugs because they're missing something in their life."

Drugs are just as common in the entertainment business as painkillers for the rest of us. For one of Nicks colleagues in the Backstreet Boys, A.J., the abuse took over and he had to go through a long and hard rehab program to get back on his feet.

As the only Danish newspaper, B.T. has interviewed 22-year old Nick Carter who in a short while will release his first solo album, Now Or Never. The album is released October 28 and the first single Help Me is released September 30.

Nick Carter looks the way he is: a 22-year old white American youngster with highlights in his dark blond hair. He has gained weight since his days as the fit front figure in the world success the Backstreet Boys. With the fit look gone, so are the clichés.

Now he looks and acts the part of the rock-popish sound of his coming album: honest, a little tired (yawns constantly during the interview -- apparently he only slept one hour last night) and apparently doesn´t have the power to talk about how he thanks God, his family and all the crap that the members of BSB in their days constantly said like puppets on strings.

He doesn´t hide the fact that his time in the Backstreet Boys (still exists on paper) was terrible at the end -- he had lived the same life since he was 12, repetition on repetition on repetition. Record album, give interviews (including thanks to God and family), dance and vocal training, going on tour. And then it starts over again.

That’s why the solo project came as a bit of save for Nick. "I was always surrounded by people. All the time. So I had to find myself," Nick says and continues while looking down at the table, "there are so many artificial people in this business. The other members of the Backstreet Boys thought it was strange that I started my solo efforts. Now they have come to understand that it was necessary for me. I was very nervous when I played the album for them because they are very picky. But they have accepted it well..."

Nick Carter himself is naturally very happy about the album -- he mentions this between two yawns. In particular his vocals on the song Do I Have To Cry For You are very close to his heart.

"In that song I really get to express my feelings, my pain and my love," the young man says. Right now there is no object of his affections in his life. The latest (short) relationship with the Swedish model Isabel Filling (there is always a Swedish model for the male superstars!) is over and the player has to chase new targets for his love.

As he is known as a man with a hunger for women. BT thought it would be in its place to hear how the sex life is coming along and asks -- how important is sex for you? Nick Carter is reluctant to answer but starts to answer that sex is important for every body until a management rep. breaks in and says that the interview is almost over and the last bit should be focused on the music.
