BreakOut Interview I LIKE BEING THE UNDERDOG At long last! Now or Never, the first solo album of Nick Carter, is about to be released. BreakOut went to Brussels to see if the Backstreet Boy could make it on his own. “I have more stagefright now than ever before. The attention used to be focused on all five of us. If something goes wrong now, everybody will see!” BO: What if you would have to choose between 1. a successful solo album, or 2. a successful Backstreet Boys album? NC: I've already had a lot of success with the Backstreet Boys, still I would like to “rule” more with the guys...I don't necessarily have to be successful with my own solo album. BO: Why not? NC: I don't need it. BO: Ok....honestly now! NC: Of course it would be awesome if my CD would be a hit. Now or Never is very personal to me. Reaching out and making just a few people happy, is most important to me. BO: Have you always dreamt about a solo-career? NC: Not specifically, although I had thought about it for quite some time. BO: Why didn't you do it before? NC: I could have done it several times, but I was having too much fun with the Backstreet Boys back then. Besides I was too busy. But now I'm older, it feels good to try it out now. BO: Do you think Kevin and the others will want to go solo now too? NC: I don't know. Could be. BO: How would you feel about that? NC: If they would, I wouldn't have any problems with it. On the contrary, I would love it! BO: Do you miss performing with the Backstreet Boys? NC: Definitely. This whole solo thing is new to me and I'm enjoying it, don't get me wrong, but still I really look forward to being on stage with the Backstreet Boys again. BO: What do the Boys think about Now or Never? NC: The album isn't completely done yet, so they haven't had the chance to listen to all the songs. But a couple of the guys have heard it and, luckily, they liked it a lot. BO: Is their opinion important to you? NC: Very important. I grew up with them, they're like my brothers. BO: Isn't it lonely? All by yourself, in the dressing room? NC: Sure is! But I do need it. Some alone-time to focus before a show. BO: What is it you do before a show? NC: Pray. Apart from that, sometimes I meditate and do some warm-ups. BO: If you really couldn't take it on your own anymore, who would you want to do a duet with? NC: If I could make a second album, I would love to do a duet with Alanis Morissette! BO: Because of her music or because of her looks? NC: I like her. Ok, she's sexy too. I've always had a crush on her. BO: You have been in showbiz for so long, do you still enjoy it? NC: Absolutely. I'm having so much fun right now! I get the chance to do new and unexpectable things, things that surprise people because they didn't expect something like that from me. BO: Isn't it scary, too? NC: Nah, I actually feel best like that. I like being the underdog. BO: What's left, for a superstar of your calibre that has sold 73 million records, to do? NC: This album is totally different, musically, from what I usually do with the Backstreet Boys. That's why I think it will take a while before people will really appreciate it... But that's ok, I have all the time! BO: So you don't want to quit and enjoy your money? NC: No way, I'm only 22 years old! Just let me rock out and have fun. I wanna entertain people, I have a lot to offer to the musicbiz. BO: Are you still nervous before a show? NC: Yes, especially now I'm out there on my own. Right before the show I get really anxious BO: Yeah, all of a sudden you're alone on stage! NC: Exactly, and that's kind of scary. During a BSB-show, the crowd's attention was focused on all five of us. If something goes wrong now, everybody will see. But apart from that, it's all awesome, really. BO: You have a smaller tourbus now, though. NC: Yeah that's right. But I'm cool with that, it's much more intimate. It doesn't all have to be big for me. I'd like to stay normal. BO: It wasn't like that with the Backstreet Boys? NC: Now I'm much more in tune with myself, which you can hear in my music. There was a lot hidden inside me that had to come out. I got the chance to talk to people through my music. Basically, this is the first time the fans get to see and hear the REAL me. BO: And the best part is you get all the groupies now! NC: I'm crazy about my fans. The good part is that I can take my time with them now and show them a little love. BO: Are you still single? NC: Yeah man! BO: So all the BreakOut girls can send you lovemail? NC: Yes, please! Thanks to Anne. |
